Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • large skillet
  • mixing spoon
  • Measuring cups
  • Chef's knife
  • Cutting Board
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 20 oz cheese tortellini
  • 1 lb ground Italian sausage
  • 24 oz marinara sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 2 tbsp fresh basil, chopped
  • salt, to taste
  • black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook the Italian sausage until fully browned, breaking it into small pieces. Drain excess grease if necessary.
  • Stir in the garlic and Italian seasoning and cook for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  • Pour the marinara sauce into the skillet, stir well, and simmer for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Add the cheese tortellini to the sauce mixture and stir until evenly coated.
  • Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish.
  • Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese evenly over the top, then finish with the Parmesan cheese.
  • Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden around the edges.
  • Allow the casserole to rest for 10 minutes, garnish with fresh basil, and serve.

Notes

Refrigerated cheese tortellini provides the best texture. Freshly shredded mozzarella melts more smoothly than pre-shredded varieties. Drain excess grease from the sausage before adding the sauce. Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving to help the sauce settle. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
